News

3rd March 2023

Although the weather seemed a little shy, we started this second half term in a blaze of all things spring! The highlight of the week has to be World Book Day. You may have heard about the Masked Reader already – this caused quite a stir! Miss Eddy will put together the highlights for next week’s newsletter.

In addition to all the stories being read around the school, we also shared a story to celebrate St David’s Day, called ‘Doing the Little Things’. Set in a Welsh village on St David’s Day, the story focuses on a little girl called Alice, who learns the meaning of Saint David’s words - ‘Do the little things that you have seen and heard from me’. The Patron Saint of Wales, didn’t slay dragons, but he led the way, showing his followers the importance of doing just small things to make the lives of others better and happier. It was a reminder to us all that doing the little things may not seem like much, but these small acts can make a big difference to the lives of others. Saint David would have been so proud of all our children who demonstrate this understanding each and every day.

Wishing you a restful weekend,

Anne Clewley

World Book Day Quiz Whizzes!
Reported by: Thomas, Serena, Elsie, Matthew

On Thursday, four Year 5 students, Thomas, Serena, Elsie and Matthew attended a book quiz at Stratford Secondary School.

We were very excited and happy to be selected to go. We just couldn't wait for World Book Day.  When we arrived at the High School, we were taken to the library by a former Alveston student, Tilda, Elsie's sister. A few minutes after we settled down, we played two truths and a lie, before reading an extract from 'Wolf Brother'. We answered questions on the text and completed a tie breaker (which was matching books to their titles).

Immediately after that, we began THE MAIN EVENT - the quiz! There were a couple of tricky questions but we got through them - then we found out we got only two wrong. Serena managed to get us two extra points by grasping the extra question and word. Can you guess what it was?

STANLEY YELNATS - what is this called? Serena knew!

Soon after there came break. There were flapjacks, gingerbread men and shortbread. When we found out our scores, we were second place and ecstatic!

Finally in the costume competition, with her quick thinking, Elsie named us 'The Midnight Gang' and we won! We had certificates for participation and for winning the group costume. We were also each given the book 'Wolf Brother'.  This was the best quiz we have ever done!

Well done Team Alveston - we are all very proud of you!
