July 2025

11th July 2025

This week we have been thinking about ‘Ambition’ in Collective Worship and I have been wowed by so many wonderful examples of ambition around school. The ambition to succeed in their productions displayed by Years 5 and 6 was incredible. Their acting, singing, humour and set design were all on point and truly made the whole school proud. In addition, ambition has been demonstrated by Year 1, asking fabulous questions at the Thinktank museum to further their learning. Ambition has been on show with our musicians who are working hard with RockSteady to prepare for their first gig next week – we can’t wait to watch you live, children!
This week, Neil Johnson from St James’ also came in and talked to the children about having ambition in their everyday actions. ‘For nothing is impossible without God’ and he said ‘What are you really good at and how can you best use it – be ambitious.’ What a lovely sentiment to take us into our last week.
Have a great weekend. See you all next week for the final week.

ThinkTank Tales

Year 1 had a fabulous day out to the Thinktank on Tuesday. They explored the museum and worked interactively on all things Science! The children also got to explore 'Mini Brum' where there was a variety of different stations that children could play at such as construction, a home corner, an active race track that records your speed, a post office and a dressing-up area - that was lots of fun! After lunch, the children explored the Science garden where they were able to problem-solve to make different mechanisms work. Finally, they had a workshop on animals where they learned about the features of the 6 animal groups: mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds and insects. The children got to see lots of animals up-close that had previously lived including stuffed animals, skeletons, skin and teeth. What a super day out!
A River Runs Through It

Year 4’s trip to Coombe Abbey Park started with rapturous rounds of singing on the bus, as excitement buzzed through the air the moment they left school! Once at the park, the children enjoyed lots of walking while exploring the river that flows through the beautiful grounds. Using maps, they traced the river’s journey back to its source — a spring in Willey, Leicestershire — and learned about how it flows through the Sowe, Avon, and Severn before reaching the sea. Along the way, they spotted interesting features like revetments, a weir, meanders, and even a water treatment unit. After all that exploring, the children were more than ready for their lunch, happily refueling before heading off to the play park to enjoy some free time. They also took measurements of the river, noticing faster flow near the banks and changes in depth, and helped clear litter from the riverbanks to keep the park clean and safe. One of the best parts was pond dipping, where they found loads of fascinating creatures like water boatmen, dragonfly nymphs, pond skaters, leeches, shrimps, and water fleas. To top off the day, a family of swans put on a graceful parade across the lake — a lovely surprise for everyone. By the time they climbed back on the bus, the children were happily worn out and some drifted off to sleep, I’m sure dreaming of their brilliant day in the sunshine! A big thank you to our accompanying parents, Mrs Turnell and Mrs May, for their support throughout the day.
Fond Farewell to Forest School!

Year 6 had a blast at their final Forest School session of primary school! They mixed up their own bubble potion—complete with the magic ingredient: sugar—and crafted colourful pipe cleaner bubble wands. Soon the air was filled with laughter and some impressive, sizable bubbles. Some children got creative on the ground, making incredible minibeast collages, while others caught butterflies and explored freely, choosing their own adventures. It was a joyful, sun-soaked send-off full of fun, freedom, and fantastic memories!
Abracadabra!

Congratulations to Year 6 for their fantastic performance of A-la-la-la-la-laaddin this week! They did an outstanding job memorising their lines, acting, designing the scenery, and delivering a captivating show. Special praise for the impressive solo performances and singing!
Tae Kwon Do Talent!

Brilliant news...Calvin, in Year 4, has passed his recent grading exam at Tae Kwon Do. He is now a red belt (just 2 steps away from black belt!). He has worked so hard at this and his family, and all of us here at Alveston Primary, are very proud of his commitment and enthusiasm. Excellent work, Calvin!

Did you know that Taekwondo, translated from Korean, means "the way of the foot and fist" or "the way of kicking and punching"? It's a Korean martial art that emphasizes kicking techniques, but also involves punches, blocks, and various other self-defence moves. The word itself is derived from three Korean words: tae (foot/kick), kwon (fist/punch), and do (way/discipline)!

So Long, Farewell...

While Place2Be will continue to run in September, Amy is off to pastures new in September. She will be running her own counselling business and is leaving Place2Be. We have been very lucky to have been appointed the services of Amy for so long and wish her very well in her new ventures. Last week, Place2Be kindly asked Mrs Rogers and I to work with them to interview our new school counsellor and we appointed a wonderful new person. They will start with us in September. As they will be working for Place2Be, their service will run in exactly the same way as before with Place2Talk sessions available for all children. We wish Amy all the best and a fond farewell.
DON'T FORGET: Summer Reading Challenge 2025!

As mentioned in last week's newsletter, Warwickshire Libraries are inviting families across Warwickshire to take part in The Reading Agency’s 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, encouraging children to explore the magical connection between storytelling and the natural world with this year’s theme: Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors.

How it Works

  1. Pop into your local Warwickshire County Council managed library from Saturday 5th July and ask to join the Summer Reading Challenge. Collect your sticker wallet to get started.
  2. Come back to the library during the summer to tell us about your reading, collect stickers and borrow more books.
  3. Come back when you have finished your challenge, tell us about your reading, collect stickers and your medal and certificate.
Please do have a read of the the libraries' Summer Holiday newsletter here.
Apply to be our School-Crossing Patroller at Alveston Primary!

Last week, we were very excited to inform you that we have been awarded funding for a much-needed School Crossing Patroller on Knights Lane! Disappointingly, WCC have not yet received any applications. We know that many of you are concerned about the increased traffic volume on Knights Lane and the general safety of pedestrians and cyclists around school. Please do spread the word far and wide - this is such a brilliant opportunity and it would be such a shame to lose it.

If you or anyone you know might be interested in this role, please do follow the instructions on the linked flyer to make an application. This role would perhaps suit a retired individual that lives in the village or a local parent with time to spare at the start and end of the school day. Or perhaps someone that simply wants to support the community.

Please note that the application window has been extended and will now close on 31st July 2025 with interviews planned to happen soon after. Rates of pay are competitive and full training will be given.

We are really excited about this and we hope that we can fully capitalise on this amazing opportunity.
Don't Miss Bayleaf Cookery Club - Autumn Term!

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday).

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:

parents3002@welearn365.com

Forest School Dates

Below is the remaining Forest School date for your diary. The children will need to wear PE kit to school with tracksuit bottoms or leggings and have a long sleeve top such as a hoodie. Wellies (and possibly a rain coat) will also be required:
