News

26th September 2025

Dear Families,

I have lots of things to tell you about this week so please read down for some key details about things happening...

Hopefully you received our Event Sheet yesterday with details of Learning Together Time on 8th October. We can't wait to welcome you into school for the first event of the year with the children! Hopefully lots of you can make time to pop in on Monday (29th September) to meet your child's class teacher and see their classroom. Children can come with you for this and it is a very informal affair. Harvest Festival is on Friday 24th October and further information will come out about this next week but please note the time of the service is 10.45 - 12.00 and children must be collected from church at 12.00pm as we have INSET that afternoon.

Accelerated Reader has now been fixed and we are delighted that children are back up and quizzing in Years 2 and up. However, did you know that, as parents, you can log in and get email notifications once your child has completed a quiz to see how they got on? To gain access to this, simply log in as your child and click home connect - get email updates. You can register more than one email address per child so both parents can get notifications about their child's progress.  A helpful parents' guide can be found here.

Our Governing Board are seeking new governors at the moment. We have a parent governor vacancy and co-opted governor vacancies. If you are interested in one of these roles, or, if you know someone who would be interested (especially if they have pertinent skills that could help our school, such as finance, HR, education etc) - we would love to hear from you. Please see the advert here. Volunteering is so rewarding!

I would like to say a HUGE thank you and well done to a group of our amazing parents who took on the challenge of Stratford Dragon Boat Festival last weekend. Not only did they get in a boat and row it for the first time ever together - they came 17th and they raised a tremendous £2,500 which will be shared with the Friends of Alveston and the Shakespeare Hospice. What a team! Thank you 'Row Hard or Row Home' team - we are very grateful (see below for pics and full report).

Finally, it is with the greatest sadness I share the news that the absolutely amazing Miss Green, our TA in Year 2, will be leaving us at half term. Miss Green has a wonderful new job opportunity that works fabulously for her family. While we will be gutted to see her go and we know the children will miss her terribly too, we know this is perfect for her and wish her every bit of love and luck in her new venture. We will be advertising for a new TA to support Year 2 and will keep you posted once we have secured someone for this role.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend. See you next week!

Safe-Driving/Parking Reminder

Please can families using the football club parking ensure that they are dropping their children off within the car park and make sure that their child(ren) make it safely to the pedestrian pathway, by the side gate. A child was dropped off on Friday morning on the blind bend near the entrance to the parking area and then had to cross in front of a stream of traffic who were unaware that the child was there. This could have led to a nasty accident.

Please do take care and keep yourselves and the children safe. Thank you for your consideration.

News from the River!

The "Row Hard or Row Home" team - a crew of amazing Alveston parents who valiantly competed in last Sunday's Dragon Boat race - wanted to let you all know that they had an amazing day! The weather was so kind which definitely helped bring an amazing atmosphere and a great turnout of support.

The crew came 17th out of 29 boats which they are all really happy with, especially considering they'd never rowed together....(and some had never rowed ever!!!). Most of their competition had previous experience so they put up a valiant fight to the finish! The team were sad to lose their head-to-head with Bridgetown BUT it was super close with a photo finish...and with faster times overall, we'll give the moral victory to the Alveston crew...(hee hee!).

The fundraising from this event was amazing - the team raised over £2,500 in total, with £1,000 going to the Shakespeare Hospice and the rest to Alveston Primary to help enrich the experience of all the children here at school.

We are blown away by the kindness, generosity and fighting spirit of the "Row Hard or Row Home" team. Moving one of those Dragon Boats along the river is no mean feat! And we are pleased to inform you that the crazy crew loved it so much they've already signed up for next year. Woo hoo! Go Alveston!!!

Bestest Buddies!

Year 6 were very excited to be introduced to their new Reception buddies this week! They are looking forward to being a role model for their buddies; helping the younger children to feel safe, happy and confident at school.
Sing-a-Long!

Year 3 went to St James' church on Wednesday afternoon to learn some fun songs and perform them for their families. All the children worked hard and managed to learn three new songs in one afternoon! Their singing was beautiful and we all had a great time.
All Things Coding and AI...

Year 3 have also been busy with Year 5 this week, working with a former Alveston student - Ellie Deaner. Ellie is currently finishing her degree in Computer Science. She is passionate about machine learning and inspiring more girls to study Computing. The children in Year 3 coded a home assistant, whilst the children in Year 5 started to learn about computer vision and the work of Fei-Fei Li - the godmother of AI.
Yogi Magic

Year 5 have been working on their flexibility in yoga this week. They practised the positions and then put them into a sequence.
"Who will help me.....?", said the Little Red Hen

This week the children in Reception have listened to the story 'The Little Red Hen'. The children felt sad that none of the animals would help make the bread. They wanted to be kind to the hen and said that they would help. The children have been exploring the ingredients needed and the steps to make bread. They all took part in the bread-making process: they washed their hands, added ingredients, mixed them together, kneaded the dough and watched as it rose in the bowl. The children then waited for it to bake in the oven and took a piece of bread home to share with their families. Well done, Reception class!
In Maths, Year 6 have been learning about common factors and common multiples. They have been practising their times tables and using number squares to find patterns in numbers.
Friends of Alveston Event –  ** Bag2School**

Friends have organised a clothing & shoe collection with Bag2School for morning drop-off on Friday 14th November, which will help raise funds for the children here at Alveston. This is a great time for a pre-Xmas clear-out and to get rid of any bits cluttering up your wardrobes! Further instructions will be provided nearer the time but you can also refer to the website here for further detail, in the meantime. Items can include adults’ and children’s clothes, shoes (tied together please), belts, handbags and soft toys. There is no limit on the number of bags so if you are having a massive clear-out, we can accept multiple bags!

Please note duvets, pillows and work or school uniform with logos are not accepted.

The most important thing to remember - THE HEAVIER THE BETTER!!!

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday).

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:

parents3002@welearn365.com
