Alveston - The Winners!
We are absolutely delighted to announce that we have won the 2023 Stratford in Bloom School's Competition! Woohoo!
Under the leadership of our brilliant teacher, Forest School Leader and Gardening Club Lead, Mrs Fielding, working with all our children, Alveston has clinched the top prize! Competition was tough from the 9 schools who entered, but they decided we had excelled with our sustainable orchard.
The official prize-giving ceremony will be held in September. In the meantime, as our Year 6 children will no longer be with us, Sue England from Stratford in Bloom and one of the schools' competition judges, kindly agreed to join us for our Celebration Assembly on Thursday to present our prizes.
The story began with an email from the Stratford in Bloom team. Within seconds of asking Mrs Fielding to lead our entry, her vision was taking shape!
As soon as we were given the theme (Sustainability) for this year's Stratford in Bloom, Year 6 got digging! They created 9 new veggie beds amongst the fruit trees in our orchard, as well as constructing a composting area and a living wall from pallets. Big thanks goes to all of Year 6. It was huge undertaking but it was completed in one afternoon by 30 very enthusiastic children.
Gardening club took over from this point and started the wonderful job of planting - everything we put in was donated or grown from seed.
Throughout the summer term, we carried on planting until every spare space was filled. We sourced old bricks, tyres, cobbles and canes from around the school grounds to make the beds even more striking. Children from across the school got involved in all sorts of ways, including making signs to identify our plants and creating 'bee bunting' to add to the colour. The Gardening Club children did an amazing job and became so knowledgeable about what they had planted. The joy, enthusiasm and dedication they brought to every session was truly wonderful to see.
Thank you to everyone in our community, children, parents and staff, who helped us to move the project forward. From wooden pallets and canes to a fabulous range of cuttings and plants - we are extremely grateful for every contribution to make this project a truly community affair.
Huge thanks to Mrs Fielding for imagining and creating the dream and leading the project to its successful conclusion. To everyone involved in its delivery - well done! Together we all shone!
