News

27th January 2023

I am writing this just before we head for Young Voices. The excitement in school is palpable! Staff and children alike, whether joining us or not, are buzzing around school in eager anticipation.

We know one of the songs we are singing will be 'Proud' written and sung by Heather Small. Tonight, we will be her backing singers live on stage, asking the question 'What have you done today to make you feel proud?'

This morning I led our weekly Celebration Assembly, my first for a couple of weeks. Oh and what joy those assemblies bring! They are my favourite of the week. It is always wonderful to hear the amazing stories behind the Star awards, to hear how our children have been shining so brightly in their own ways and to marvel at the progress they have made over the terms and years. Our children, our staff and our parents are so proud of the achievements of all our stars, as we consider what they have done this week to make themselves feel proud.

I am always emotional following these assemblies. To see the ethos of our school, created by our community during the pandemic, living, breathing and shining so brightly each Friday morning is truly wonderful. Alveston C of E Primary School, you make me proud of you each and every single day. Thank you.

Busy Bees!

Year 4 have had a very busy and creative few days!

Bikeability

Year 4 had the opportunity to complete their Level 1 Bikeability course last Friday. The aim was to develop our children’s bike handling skills to enable them to make short off-road journeys by bicycle. The children all received a certificate, badge and some tips to continue their cycling journey. Well done Year 4!

Forest School

At Forest School this week, Year 4 developed their rope skills by creating dreamcatchers. They also enjoyed lighting fires and drinking hot chocolate.

Wolf Art

Some children in Year 4 compiled all the information about wolves they have learnt so far. They turned this information into fact files for our display. On one side, you can see their beautiful interpretations of wolves and on the other side, their favourite wolf facts. We cannot wait for them to dry so we can add them to our display.

Year 6 hosted their Spring Collective Worship on the theme of, ‘Let your light shine’. Oscar D, Isabella, Beatrice, Olivia, Sam and Rheya together designed, prepared, rehearsed and delivered their own assembly. They addressed our school mission to SHINE and engaged the audience with riddles!  Follow this link for photos. Amazing work, Year 6!

Staff Announcements

The lovely Mrs Burvill has supported our team and family at Alveston for almost 2 decades. Mrs Burvill has worked tirelessly to help the school run smoothly. This has included turning her hand to any and all roles in school when required.

Today we are sad to announce Mrs Burvill's decision to retire at the end of this half term. (I know what you are thinking! She doesn't look old enough to retire! We have asked Hilary to share her secrets before she leaves!)

Alveston will not be the same without Mrs Burvill!

We will also being saying 'au revoir' to Mrs Lane in the Admin Office. Sad to announce for us, but we are delighted for Mrs Lane. Leaving for pastures new, Mrs Lane has secured a post at Heart of England School. Mrs Lane is returning to her expertise of looking after the finances at a large secondary school. She has brought so much colour to Alveston (literally and metaphorically!) and her wonderful laugh will be missed by us all!

I know I speak for everyone in our Alveston Family when I say we will miss these two ladies enormously and wish them all the very best on their next adventures!

If you would like to send your own wishes, please do give these to Mrs C and we will present them with all those from the school.

Bean(ie)...but not gone!

Last week saw the arrival of an exciting pop-up shop selling the beautiful, personalised beanies and bobble hats some of our children (and I!) have been wearing.

For those of you who missed the pop-up shop or who weren't able to make a purchase on the day, you'll be pleased to know that the beanies/bobbles are available to buy online via the website - haube.co.uk . The hats are £9.99 each, but if parents enter ALVESTON at checkout they will receive 20% off their hat purchase.

(Psssssssssst! Rumour has it that summer caps are also available in bottle green with white initials to match the uniform..!)

However, please remember  - there is absolutely no requirement to make a purchase as these are an optional part of our uniform.

Bonjour! French Club bookings for Summer Term are now open.  Please click here for French Club information and how to book.

Parking at Drop Off and Pick Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop off and pick up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane or Oak Road for pick up or drops offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic resuming and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

The car park is safer for pedestrians as well as families loading and unloading into cars. Parents have reported an increase in cars parked on Oak Road and many cars have parked on double yellow lines. Please be considerate to the safety of all. Thank you.
