Learning Together Time 17.1.23

It was wonderful having families join us for Learning Together Time once again this month. We really appreciate the support you provide in these sessions as we can show you a little of what learning at Alveston is like. Here is a little run down of the learning that took place in each class.

Reception - Following their theme of 'Around the World', Reception were exploring China and Chinese New Year. Families joined in with ongoing provision activities such as - making paper lanterns, cutting out shape dragons, exploring numbers to 5, playing in the supermarket and exploring numbers on the interactive board. The children were really proud to show their families their classroom and the activities and resources that they enjoy playing with.

Year 1 and their parents enjoyed a phonics lesson. As the children are at a crucial phase of bringing all their phonics skills together, it was a great opportunity for parents to truly understand how we teach phonics.

Year 2 took inspiration from the Ghanaian Adinkra cloth. They created their own stamps using playdough to add designs to their own piece of fabric. The pieces will be sewn together to create a larger piece.

Year 3 - During learning together time in Year Three, the children and adults got to work as historical detectives. We investigated a range of interesting artefacts from the Stone Age settlement at Skara Brae. We had fun drawing from observation and then discussing each item in turn before we put the pieces together to come up with an historically valid description of what life was like there. We all enjoyed working together solving a mystery from history!

Year 4's learning together time was based around our class book, The Eye of the Wolf. The children began by explaining to their adults what the book was about. They specifically told their adult a memory from Blue Wolf’s past. The children were then tasked to respond to the book in a creative way. We created memory boxes for the wolf. On the outside is the wolf himself however when you peer inside the box you are transported to the 3D memory of the wolf.

Year 5 spent the afternoon swimming at Stratford pool!

Year 6 - As part of our Science topic, 'Living Things and their Habitats' and our Geography topic, 'Frozen Planet', Year 6 (and their parents!) were tasked with creating a new polar animal! It had to be animal that really could be discovered and classified within the animal kingdom. They had to design a detailed drawing of their polar animal and consider aspects such as it's habitat, diet, sleep, respiration and appearance. This resulted in some very unique animals such as the Whengulin, Arctic Goat, Peng Bear Fish, Antarctic Hairy Horse and Pencorn!
