News

25th November 2022

This week we had an exciting visitor to Alveston! On Tuesday, Mr Brian Johnson joined us for Collective Worship. Mr Johnson is the author of 'Just Six Square Miles - a journey through time.' The book covers the history of the Parish of Alveston, known more recently as the Tiddington Ward. Mr Johnson shared some of his fascinating findings with us, from the ice age to the Romans. Although this only scratched the surface of the history covered in his book, the children were spellbound and listened intently to the wonderful, local history lesson. They asked some very thought provoking questions and demonstrated what wonderful, inquisitive historians they are.

Mr Johnson also had some exciting news. When he wrote the book, he pledged all the profits made from its sale to Alveston C of E Primary School. As a result, we were delighted to receive a cheque for £300. We will be putting this money towards our playground project. We cannot thank Mr Johnson enough for this very generous donation and for his time on Tuesday. We have already asked him to return to support our learning of the Romans in Year 3!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our children, parents and staff for all the shoeboxes they donated. Thanks to everyone's generosity we beat our all time record and 118 children living on the Ukraine border and in Romania will receive a present this Christmas.  Thank you Alveston!

Wishing everyone a restful weekend,

Times Tables Rock Stars

This week, our brilliant mathematicians in KS2 took part in the national Times Table competition, "England Rocks".  Out of a total entry of 30,000 classes across the country, Alveston placed in the top 25 percent nationally, so well done to all our TT Rock stars!

The top 3 scoring children in each class received certificates in assembly and the coveted air-guitar for the most valuable player in the school went to Felix in Year 5.

Well done, everyone!

Classroom Round Up!

Football Fever! Year 4 and 5 had a blast playing football last week. While the girls had a kick around with a Football Coach promoting girls’ football, the boys played against each other in mini tournaments.

Year 4 enjoyed a wonderful tasting session with 'Chef Adopt a School' this week. Chef Jonathan joined us to teach the children about where foods come from, the different taste buds on our tongue and how our other senses have an impact on how we taste food.

This week Mrs Foster sent a message to all parents regarding a change to the process of ordering children's lunches. This change will happen at the start of the spring term in January 2023. Please ensure you have read this letter and understand the changes we are making.

General Reminders

Parking at Drop Off and Pick Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop off and pick up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane or Oak Road for pick up or drops offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic resuming and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

The car park is safer for pedestrians as well as families loading and unloading into cars. Parents have reported an increase in cars parked on Oak Road and many cars have parked on double yellow lines. Please be considerate to the safety of all. Thank you.
