News

11th November 2022

We have had another wonderful week this week, made extra special by seeing so many parents in school. The first Parents’ Evenings of the year gave the teachers and parents the opportunity to share how children have settled into their learning in their new class, the progress they are making and their targets for the year ahead. There is always such a lovely buzz about school on Parents’ Evenings and this week was no exception. Thank you to everyone who completed the questionnaire for Governors. We really do appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on how we are doing. The Governors will share the feedback from the questionnaires next week.

On Friday in addition to seeing several parents for Celebration Assembly, Year 2 and Year 6 children were joined by lots of parents for our service at the Alveston War Memorial.  The service, led by Revd. Linda, incorporated a Year 6 performance of the poem "In Flanders Fields" by Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, written during the First World War. The children also laid a wreath created by Year 2 and Mrs Rogers read a prayer  written by Year 2 children. Well done Year 2 and Year 6, I was so proud of you, your exemplary behaviour and your contribution to the service. Thank you to Revd. Linda, Governor Martin Grubb and all the parents, who walked with us and joined us at the service, it was an absolute pleasure to share this time with you.

Wishing you all a peaceful weekend,

Anne Clewley

On Thursday, our Year 3 and 4 Cross Country team headed to the Recreation Ground to compete against other Stratford schools in a 2k race. The field was large and the pace was fast but our runners did brilliantly in their first ever experience of a Cross Country competition. Henry P in Year 4 came 2nd in his race, while Oliver in Year 3 came top 7. All the runners performed well and we are super proud of you. Well done to Cora, Hazel, Quinn, McLaren, Noah, Oliver, Willow, Isabelle, Sadie, Henry, Seth and Harley.  Also thanks to Mr Williams, Sadie’s dad, for being a parent volunteer on the day.

A special mention must also go to Isabella in Year 6 who acted as a lead-out runner (hare) for the younger children and was a huge help to the adults on the day. Isabella came first in her race at the end of October, and Oscar Perham came fourth in his. We are hoping the other year 5s and 6s, who were unable to compete then, will have their chance in a rescheduled event in the New Year. We will update you as we know more.

In other news, some of our Year 6 pupils have hosted their first Collective Worship on Curiosity.

Jasmine, Izzy, Annabelle, Emily, Madison, Mia and Daisy together designed, prepared, rehearsed and delivered their own assembly. They addressed our school value of Curiosity in a creative and interactive manner which both engaged and captivated their audience.

Well done girls!

Matilda!

Last weekend, seven of our talented children from Alveston starred in a Production of Matilda The Musical Jr at the Stratford Playhouse. Unsurprisingly, the production sold out in record time but those who were lucky enough to see it were absolutely thrilled with the quality of the production and the young stars who shone in it. "I've seen Matilda at the RSC and in London, but this production was just as good, if not better! The kids did an amazing job. Truly brilliant!" said a very proud teacher who was lucky enough to see them in action.

Well done to Charlie, Chloe, Elsie, Finn, Max, Millie and Serena!

School Poetry Day

Just a reminder that, on Monday 14th November,  the school will enjoy a Poetry Day with Andy Tooze!

Andy is a poet and specialist poetry teacher from Derbyshire.  Prior to working as a full time poet he was a primary school teacher! Andy will engage the whole school with both an introductory and celebratory assembly. He will visit each class in turn to run dynamic and interactive poetry workshops.

Parents and children can read some sample poems from each of Andy's three most recent books by clicking on the image of the relevant front page on the 'books' page of Andy's website here

Signed copies of Andy's books, 'Green Shoots Rising', 'The Poetry Bug' and 'The Poetry Bug Strikes Again' (which you can purchase at all good bookstores) will be available to purchase on the day for the discounted amount of £5 each. Please put the correct money in a named envelope for the children to either hand to the author directly or, if you would prefer, envelopes can be handed to a member of staff on the gate that morning.

Please note that we cannot take responsibility for lost money.

Thank you to the Friends of Alveston for funding this exciting day for our children!

Save the Friends of Alveston!

On Thursday 17th November we will be holding the Friends of Alveston AGM at school in the Community Room at 2pm.  We would love to see as many parents as possible to learn more about Friends (our PTA -  Parent Teacher Association).

It is also a vital meeting as the Chair, Treasurer and Secretary are stepping down. Without these important positions filled, we will unfortunately need to close our parents’ association and sadly it will mean the end of many exciting events our children and families enjoy.

We therefore need nominations for these posts to be emailed by to   tim@friendsofalveston.onmicrosoft.com and parents3002@welearn365.com by Wednesday 16th November at the very latest.

You can find more information about the AGM and the committee roles here.

Friends of Alveston Event Reminder –  ** Bag2School**

As per our announcement in last week's newsletter, there will be a clothing & shoe collection with Bag2School, at morning drop-off on Friday 18th November, in order to raise much needed funds for Friends of Alveston.

Hopefully you will have received your Bag2School leaflets in your child’s book bag.

This is the perfect time for a pre-Christmas clear-out and to get rid of any summer bits cluttering up your wardrobes that you may not need anymore. If you have any items that you are able to get rid of, please pop them in a bin bag and attach the leaflet to the bag. Items can include adults’ and children’s clothes, shoes (tied together please), belts, handbags and soft toys. The leaflet gives more information but you can also refer to the website here for further detail.

There is no limit on the number of bags so if you are having a massive clear-out, we can accept all the bags!

Please note duvets, pillows and work or school uniform with logos are not accepted.

Most importantly - THE HEAVIER THE BETTER!!!

General Reminders

Parking at Drop Off and Pick Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop off and pick up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane or Oak Road for pick up or drops offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic resuming and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

The car park is safer for pedestrians as well as families loading and unloading into cars. Parents have reported an increase in cars parked on Oak Road and many cars have parked on double yellow lines. Please be considerate to the safety of all. Thank you.
