June 2025

13th June 2025

This week we have been thinking about hope in our community within Collective Worship and it has been lovely to witness some great examples of this in action recently. For example, our gardening club and Year 4 families transformed our outdoor garden space. The sun and rain over the last few weeks have made it truly bloom and it looks wonderful. What a joy for all of us to experience but not only that, it is alive with insects too. Another lovely example of hope within our community has been our Reception families getting together to work with Simon (Bicycle Guru that he is) to teach the children how to ride their bikes. Not only has every child who took part in these sessions achieved that goal but it was a really lovely opportunity for families to get together after school and to get to know one another. Hopefully this will be something that could happen in future years too. A big thank you to the Reception parents who organised this and a huge WELL DONE to the superstars who succeeded in their bike riding mission. Finally, seeing the new Reception children starting their settling-in sessions this week brought so much joy and hope to everyone who saw them. For many families, this is their first experience of stepping into the world of school, and Alveston as a community, but my hope sincerely is that they know, as I hope you all know, that everyone is welcomed here and everyone is cared for. Hopefully we will see lots of new faces next Friday at the Summer Fair!

Whether you are celebrating Father's Day or remembering someone special this weekend, I hope it is peaceful and relaxing.

The Sikh Gurdwara Visit

Year 6 enjoyed a fantastic visit to the Sikh Gurdwara, where they gained a deeper understanding of its significance and role in the Sikh faith. They were warmly welcomed and had the opportunity to experience Sikhism first-hand.

During their visit, the children explored the prayer hall, where the Guru Granth Sahib is kept, and learned about the Sikh Gurus and the symbolic importance of the 5Ks. They also visited the langar (community kitchen) and shared a snack, experiencing the spirit of equality and service.

The children showed exemplary behaviour throughout the trip and treated the experience with great respect. Well done, Year 6!

Year 4’s Amazing Repeated Pattern Tiles!

Our Year 4 class has been working hard on their repeated pattern tiles, and the results are fantastic! They went through a challenging and creative process—tearing papers and cards to make shapes for a collage inspired by the mood boards they made previously. After that, they cut their tile into four sections and rearranged them to create a brand-new design. Next, the children photocopied their designs to produce large-scale repeated patterns. Don’t their examples look incredible? I can already picture these patterns on tablecloths, bedspreads, curtains, or even clothing! Well done, Year 4! Plus, the children are still washing out their glue batik fabrics, and the results are stunning. Keep an eye out for more fabulous art coming soon!
Let’s Go Fly a Kite Ride a Bike!

Earlier in the year, Simon Storey helped to set up the Bicycle Bus here at Alveston Primary. Thanks to Simon championing this scheme - and our ever-enthusiastic families - Bicycle Bus has gone from strength to strength: initially starting with 10 children, we have grown to 30 "on the bus"! The bus has become so popular that even children who couldn’t yet ride their bikes wanted to join! So, one of our amazing parents (Isabel) approached Simon to see if Cycle Infinity CIC could set up a learn-to-ride club. Simon’s answer was a resounding YES! Parents were keen and 12 Reception children signed up…and after gaining their confidence on Alveston’s playground, all 12 children can now ride their bikes and have accomplished their wish of joining the Alveston Bike Bus. How brilliant is that?! A huge thank you to Isabel for her great idea and to Simon for his enthusiasm and hard work with the children. This really is such a lovely success story!

If you would like your child to learn to ride or improve their cycle skills, get in touch with Simon from Cycle Infinity CIC at hello@cycleinfinity.co.uk to find out how.

Fantastic Forest School!

Year 3 had a fantastic time at Forest School recently! Some of the children tackled ancient Egypt-themed orienteering challenges, wading through long grasses while reading maps with keen focus, while others transformed leaves and flowers into stunning, vibrant prints by hammering nature’s treasures into muslin cloth—Oak leaves stole the show with their perfect imprints! Wildlife made a special appearance too: an electric blue damselfly zipped by, a huge busy ant nest buzzed with activity, a gorgeous cinnabar moth fluttered close, and a quick flash hinted at a shy muntjac nearby. Meanwhile, some friends built cozy dens, and others crafted delicious nature sushi rolls—pure magic in the great outdoors!
See Life at Sea Life!

On Thursday, Year 2 visited the Sea Life Centre in Birmingham. They learned more about the habitats of the animals they have been finding out about in Science. Did you know that an Octopus has three hearts and blue blood?! Lots of lovely pictures will follow next week...!
Scholastic Book Fair: 23rd - 26th June

We’re excited to let you all know that our Scholastic Book Fair is coming soon!

Families are warmly invited to visit the Book Fair straight after school from Monday 23rd to Thursday 26th June. This is a fantastic opportunity to browse a wide selection of books with your child and make purchases if you wish. To help build excitement, we’re also running a whole-school competition!

Competition: Design a Book Cover!

We’re inviting all families to get creative and design a brand-new book cover for a favourite story—or even for a book your child would love to write one day! Entries can be hand-drawn or digital and should include:
  • A front cover design
  • A title
  • The author’s name (your child or a made-up name)
Please return entries to your child’s class teacher by Friday 20th June. Winners will receive a voucher to spend at the Book Fair!

For more information about the Book Fair, including payment options, featured books, and pre-order details, please visit:  https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/parents

We can’t wait to see your creative entries and look forward to welcoming families to the Fair!

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday).

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:

parents3002@welearn365.com
