Online Safety

Reception

This week Reception recapped what they remembered about online safety before moving onto exploring Hector's World. Through this series of animations we learnt more about keeping our personal details and our passwords private. The children came up with their own nicknames for the internet. Great ideas such as, 'Make Up Girl', 'Shark Boy', 'Glittery Unicorn' and 'Pink Sparkle'.

Year 1

Year 1 watch Hector’s Story, the Info Gang, to learn about being safe on the computer and to be especially careful what you share with others.  The children discussed the emotions of a key character when she felt unsafe and how your body alerts you that something isn’t feeling right.

Year 2

We looked at the story Webster’s email by Hannah Whaley. We then discussed what is appropriate and inappropriate in terms of content and behaviour for using emails. We then put this into practice in our computer lesson by sending an email to a friend in our class.

Year 3

Year 3 have been exploring the key messages of Online Safety. We have been focusing on password security, including how to make a secure password and what we can do to keep these safe.

Year 4

Year 4 have been considering that not everything we see online is real. We have been exploring some of the reasons why there is false information online or why people do not tell the truth. To ensure we remember to stay safe online, we have put together PowerPoint Presentations for each other on how to stay safe. These tips include never giving anyone your personal information, always checking a friend request with the person face to face and always asking a trusted adult for advice.

Year 5

In Year 5, we have discussed the safe use of the internet including social media and games. We reviewed the age-rating of different apps and games and evaluated the pros and cons of social media use. In Computing, we then practised using the internet safely whilst designing Online Safety leaflets.

Year 6

In Year 6 we discussed scenarios that may face us at secondary school and considered how we would deal with these situations. Once something has been sent online, texted or posted on social media it can NEVER be taken back. There are also ways that people can retrieve whatever has been sent, even if it has been deleted. There are laws against sharing inappropriate photos of children and young people. In addition, we made class posters to reinforce messages about online safety before we move on to secondary school.
