Year 1 is taught by Mrs Rogers with Mrs Matthews and Mrs Lawrence supporting the children with their learning. In addition to the classroom, Year 1 have access to a large covered outside area, practical area and additional space for a role play area. This means that as children move from the EYFS to the National Curriculum they can do so building up gradually ensuring a smooth and happy transition.
In Spring term, we focused initially on our Geography skills and learnt about Explorers.
We focused on five Explorers, Christopher Columbus, Captain Scott, Amelia Earhart, Captain Cook and Neil Armstrong. We then used this as the stimulus for our writing skills and learnt how to write diary entries and letters inspired by their adventures. We designed Explorer puppets and created Antarctica Art using real pictures from Antarctica as our starting point.
Our second topic was How we used to live. We looked at historical changes beyond living memory from Schooling and transport to houses and everyday items in our home.
We learnt about the book The Tiger who came to Tea by Judith Kerr and wrote non chronological reports about Tigers.
