November 2025

14th November 2025

What a wonderful week we have had at Alveston.

It was wonderful to hold our first Open Morning for Reception 2026 on Wednesday. Our Year 6 children love the opportunity to take new families on a tour of the school (who knows it better than them?) and the children truly shine carrying out this role. It is lovely hearing about how warm and welcoming Alveston is - even on drizzly, grey days!

Thank you for having the most incredible clear outs for Bag2School. The Friends of Alveston were given a cheque for £120. What a whopping amount! Thank you so much. Our Friends raise a huge amount of money and every penny comes back to support school. So, again, THANK YOU!

Today after ten months, it was lovely to see Mrs Clewley and to bid her a fond farewell. There were lots of tears but also lots of smiles and memories shared as we gave her beautiful cards from every class and sang some of her favourite songs. Thank you for standing in the pouring rain to say goodbye, I know it meant a lot to her. It's now time for a fresh start for Alveston and the governors are in the process of recruiting a new Headteacher. You will be updated as soon as possible once more information is available about this.

I really hope the rain clears and we all get to go out and enjoy some fresh air this weekend! We are really looking forward to seeing you all next week for Parents' Evening. Please remember, there are no teacher led clubs next week.

Congratulations to this week's team point winners, Tudor Greens! And a big "WELL DONE" to anyone who earned a team point this week.

Remembrance Day Service

This week, pupils from Year 2 and Year 6 attended a special Remembrance Day service at the memorial. The service was led by Mrs Rogers and one of our school governors, Mr Martin Grubb.

Year 2 created a beautiful poppy wreath, which they laid at the memorial to honour those who have served and sacrificed. Year 6 read a thoughtful poem, showing great respect and understanding for the importance of the occasion.

All of the children behaved beautifully and represented our school with pride and dignity. It was a moving and memorable experience for everyone involved.

Poppy Appeal

A huge thank you to Year 6 for their wonderful efforts in selling poppies and helping to raise money for the Royal British Legion.
Last Call for Shoeboxes!

This is our last official push for completed Christmas shoeboxes, please! We've managed to squeeze a few extra days and the final deadline is now Thursday 20th November 2025. Please bring boxes to the school office.

Thank you so much again for your generous support with this meaningful project — together, we hope to send as many shoeboxes as possible (and beat last years total!).
Introducing The Great AR Quiz-Off!

From Monday 17th November to Friday 12th December, classes from Year 2 to Year 6 will be competing to see who can complete the most Accelerated Reader quizzes. Every quiz passed adds to the class total, so teamwork and reading enthusiasm are key! Children will find out all about the competition during Collective Worship on Monday 17th November. The winning class will earn a special class reward, a Reading Champions Certificate, and even get to choose any adult in school to come and read to them - with a book they vote for! Let’s get reading and see who will be crowned our Reading Champions of 2025!
Make a Bauble for Our Grand Christmas Tree!

We need your help to make our NEW Grand Christmas Tree sparkle!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Tell friends and family and purchase a bauble from our stall — 17th–20th November, 3:15pm (£2.30 each).

  2. Take your bauble home and decorate it however you like.

  3. Don’t forget to add the tag provided with your name, school year, and telephone number.

  4. Bring your decorated bauble back to school by 28th November so we can place it on the tree.

All baubles will be returned as a lovely keepsake.

Let’s make our tree shine bright with your amazing creations and enjoy seeing them sparkle at our Christmas Shine Bright event on 1st December!

And don't forget....

Thursday, 27th November: Christmas Wreath Making Evening!
Kick off the festive season with a fun night of wreath making, with flowers by Cara of Tiddington (18+ only, please). Enjoy a drink and a sweet treat and lots of holiday cheer! Drinks and nibbly snacks will also be available for purchase at the event. Tickets are limited so book now on the PTA Events website to avoid missing out (booking deadline is 20th November). Doors open at 7pm and wreath making will start at 7:30ish. Tell your friends and family, too!
Trip to St. John’s Victorian House

Year 2 had a wonderful time stepping back in time during our visit to St. John’s Victorian House! The children experienced what it was like to be pupils in a Victorian classroom — they had to call the teacher “Ma’am” and make sure they were on their very best behaviour.

After their lessons, the children explored the Victorian laundry, where they learnt how to grate soap, scrub clothes, and use old-fashioned washing equipment. Everyone was fascinated by how much work went into doing the washing in those days!

To finish the day, we had lots of fun playing traditional Victorian playground games. It was a fantastic hands-on way to bring our history topic to life, and the children were brilliant throughout the day.

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday).

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:

parents3002@welearn365.com
