News

18th November 2022

This week our children sent 102 shoebox presents to the charity Teams4U. Our shoeboxes will make their way to Romania and the border of Ukraine next Saturday.

Already exceeding our 100 shoebox target, we know there are more boxes to come.  The most boxes we have ever sent is 108 in 2019 and I think we are going to surpass this record with ease. With so much financial uncertainty for us all, this is truly amazing. Everyone in our community has been involved in this project - children, parents and staff - and we cannot thank you enough.  Alveston, you are truly wonderful!

If you have time this weekend and would like to contribute a shoebox or two, it really isn't too late. Let's make this the biggest and best year ever and send those children all our love at this special time.
(Final pick up day is Friday 25th November!)

I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents about our Emotional Regulation meeting next week on Thursday 24th November. Starting at 3.30pm, SENDCo Mrs Quainton Stubbs, Deputy Head Teacher Mrs Newitt and I will be sharing the strategies we are teaching children, strategies which can benefit our community as a whole. Please see below for more information on the meeting and how to sign up.

School Poetry Day

On Monday, the whole school participated in our Poetry Day with author Andy Tooze.

The children enjoyed two assemblies which contained performance poetry pieces and enabled all our children to join in with actions and words.

Each class enjoyed a workshop which involved speaking, listening, reading, writing and drama. Years 2 and above were given a variety of simple, helpful hints to enable them to compose their own poems.

At the end of the day, the whole school came back together for a celebration assembly. Children shared their poems composed during the day.

It was a joyful day for all the children, with lots of smiles. We hope that it has inspired children to enjoy listening to, reading and writing their own poetry!

Thank you again to the Friends of Alveston for supporting us to make this happen.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal 2022 - a BIG THANK YOU!!!

A whopping **102** shoeboxes were loaded on to the Teams4U van on Friday. Already beating our target of 100 boxes, this is an amazing achievement and it's all thanks to you!

Your much-needed and much-appreciated shoeboxes will make their way to Romania and the border of Ukraine next Saturday. Do not despair if you haven't managed to get your shoebox to us just yet - the Teams4U van is very kindly returning next Friday 25th November to collect any remaining boxes. Phew!

Thank you for so much for supporting such a wonderful charity – your gifts of love will change the lives of vulnerable children and families across eastern Europe. The power of the shoebox is huge!

Year 6 Marvellous Make Do and Mend

Year 6 have been engaged in a 'Make Do and Mend Project' linked to their topic on WW2. The children were tasked with upcycling items of clothing.

The children had great fun and there were some amazing results! To see a selection of their results click here
Parent Meeting on Thursday 24th November : Emotional Regulation

This year we have continued our work to help children to understand their feelings and behaviours. This includes what might trigger certain feelings and behaviours, how to regulate their emotions, understanding the impact their actions may have on others and how to repair relationships when things go wrong. We have introduced some new approaches to support this work. These include:  Emotion Coaching, Zones of Regulation - which we have just started introducing to the children - and Restorative Practice - introduced in spring 2022.

We would like to invite all our parents and carers to a meeting on Thursday 24th November at 3.30pm, to share the approaches and strategies we are teaching the children. We hope that sharing these strategies with our families will benefit our community as a whole.

For those parents attending the meeting, we will be offering childcare for school age children. We will sadly not be able to provide childcare for pre-school children. You may however bring younger siblings with you on the understanding that if your child becomes restless, you will leave the meeting so as not to disturb others.

If you would like to join us to learn more, please see the message sent via the eschools app (sent on 3rd November and titled, "Parent and Carers' meeting 24th November 2022"). You can complete the registration form here to confirm your attendance. We will then be able to ensure we have the right number of seats for you and adult supervision for your children.   We would love to see as many of you as possible to continue to work together on this important topic for our children.

General Reminders

Parking at Drop Off and Pick Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop off and pick up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane or Oak Road for pick up or drops offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic resuming and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

The car park is safer for pedestrians as well as families loading and unloading into cars. Parents have reported an increase in cars parked on Oak Road and many cars have parked on double yellow lines. Please be considerate to the safety of all. Thank you.
