Phonics and Reading

Our aim at Alveston is for every child to leave our school as competent, fluent readers who love reading for pleasure. We see this as an exciting journey for us all and one that relies upon us working together and investing time to make this happen.

We start the children's reading journey using the Read Write Inc phonics programme to build phonic knowledge and sight reading capability. Parents can find more information by following the links below.

Children's reading books, which they bring home to share, are accurately matched to their phonic knowledge and the sounds they are learning in class. In addition to these books, they will also bring home a book of their choice for you to read together.

Once children are confident and secure with all their sounds and are reading independently, they progress onto the Accelerated Reader Programme. This excellent resource is designed to help your child choose appropriate books from our well stocked library, filled with a diverse range of genres. It also allows us to track their progress.

Having read their book, children take an online quiz and get immediate feedback. Gaining points as they read, children are motivated to make progress with their reading skills. Parents receive more information about the programme when their child begins.

We promote reading and reading skills across our curriculum. Rich texts are selected to compliment our English and Topic curriculum in every class.

Securing children's phonic knowledge, motivating them to read and sharing our own love of reading during lessons, helps us move closer to realising our goal.
