30th January 2026

Dear Families

We are delighted to launch our new reading den outside at lunchtimes from next week. This is our first step in changing lunch and break times as we know this is the time when lots of children struggle. We have lots of changes planned and we are really excited about these - watch this space!

This weekend we are thrilled to be performing at St James' Church in a family service for Bishop Sophie. This is such a special opportunity for the children at Alveston and I felt so proud of the choir of children, who are volunteering their time to come and sing, as they rehearsed this week. They sounded truly glorious and I am sure it will be a really momentous occasion.

Good luck to Year 5 as they start Bikeability next week. I really hope it helps more children 'hop on board' the Bicycle Bus once they have completed this life skill.

Have a great weekend.

Team Cup Winners

Congratulations to this week's team cup winners, Tudor Reds! And a big "WELL DONE" to anyone who earned team points this week.
Drinks Bottles

Just a quick note to say that it is perfectly fine for Alveston children to bring either squash or water in their drinks bottles. The bottom line is that we want the children to drink - it's obviously so important for their general wellbeing - and we are aware that lots of children just don't like water. However, please do try to ensure that the squash is well diluted. We hope that this helps make life a little easier for everyone.
Conflict, Peace and Reconciliation

The Year 6 children had a wonderful time at Coventry Cathedral this week. They enjoyed their Conflict, Peace and Reconciliation tour - learning how Coventry Cathedral is at the heart of global reconciliation initiatives. They investigated how we use our past to strive for forgiveness instead of conflict. The children explored the ruins of the old Cathedral, which was destroyed in 1940 and explored the meaning behind artefacts found in the main Cathedral today. In addition, the children were invited to participate in the Litany of Reconciliation.
Safety Tips

On Tuesday, the School Council team got together to present some safety tips for us when we are out and about. The children planned the assembly on the areas they wanted to discuss. The topics they talked about were how to stay safe near roads, water, fire and how to keep safe when at the park and in our local area. The children gave us tips on what to do if we were ever in danger.
Community Reading

Our Community Reading Club spent time with elderly residents to share books, stories and conversation. Through reading aloud and listening to personal memories, the children experienced the true value of community - building connections across generations, showing empathy, and learning that everyone has a story worth hearing. It is a meaningful reminder that small moments of kindness and shared time can make a big difference.
Bear Chairs

This week in DT, Year 2 took on the challenge of designing and making a chair for a bear to sit on! Our aim was to create a sturdy structure that was both strong and stable. The children first explored how to make frameworks secure, testing different ways to strengthen their designs. They did this by testing different shapes (cubes and cylinders) and testing layers of material. They then moved on to designing their own chairs, carefully planning their ideas before building them. The children will go onto evaluate their chairs next week, thinking about what worked well and what could be improved.

Sporting News!

Our recent netball match against Bridgetown didn’t go our way on the scoreboard, but it was a great game full of energy, teamwork, and plenty of positive moments. The players showed strong effort and sportsmanship throughout, and most importantly, had a lot of fun out on the court. With great spirit and valuable match experience gained, the team is excited and ready for the upcoming games ahead.

Our Year 4 speed stacking team had a fantastic time at the Speed Stacking County Finals, where they competed brilliantly and showed just how much progress they’ve made. The children demonstrated great focus and determination, making huge improvements from previous rounds and confidently taking part in a range of different activities throughout the day. Their teamwork, enthusiasm, and positive attitude made Alveston incredibly proud, and they represented the school superbly.

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please note: Parking is only available if there are spaces free and we can only park in the allocated bays. Once all the marked bays are full each day, parents will need to find alternative parking when dropping off and collecting their children. Please do not park in any other areas of the car park going forward. Please do not park on any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings at the main entrance to school. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message. You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday).

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:
