It has been a real pleasure to welcome everyone back to a new school year at Alveston.

It has been particularly lovely to visit our Reception children and families at home this week and to meet and welcome our new families to our school community. We are so pleased to see how confidently the children in all classes have settled into their new routines.

Already, it has been wonderful to see such positive attitudes, kindness towards one another and such enthusiasm for learning. These are all such important qualities, and they have made for a very happy start to the year.

Thank you to all our families for your continued support. We are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead, filled with learning, laughter and wonderful experiences together.

Year 6 Information Meeting - Thurs 10 Sept (5pm)
 
Mrs Newitt and Mrs Priest will be holding a Year 6 information meeting at 5pm on Thursday 10th September to discuss general expectations for the year, the SATS process, as well as give a brief overview of the Year 6 Residential trip. We hope that as many of you as possible can make it. We apologise for the short notice on this - we have only just been able to put this in the diary - but we wanted to talk to you as soon as possible, particularly re Residential costings. We look forward to seeing you!
What a wonderful first few days in Year 1! The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning and getting busy in the classroom. Miss Griffiths has been really impressed with the children’s independence and confidence.
Miss Mabbett tells us that Year 3 have had a brilliant start to the year! Lots of learning has taken place already and they are getting to grips with new routines and responsibilities in Key Stage 2.
Early Warning Signs
 
The children have been busy settling back into their routines and revisiting their learning about feelings, early warning signs and the Zones of Regulation. The children have been thinking carefully about how their bodies can tell them when they are beginning to feel worried, frustrated, excited or overwhelmed and exploring ways they can recognise and manage these feelings. Mrs Onslow told us that Year 2 have particularly enjoyed acting out and identifying different early warning signs, helping the children to understand themselves and each other a little better. It has been a brilliant start to the year and we are so proud of the children for the thoughtful way they have approached their learning so far!
Number Line Fun!
 
Year 4 had great fun learning all about number lines in maths this week! They used cubes to help explore total value, intervals and how to find the value of each step. To make their learning even more memorable, the children took the opportunity to write directly on the tables to show their thinking and work through the problems together. It was a hands-on way to bring number lines to life and helped everyone develop a clearer understanding of the concept. And don’t worry… we won’t tell Mrs Newitt about the table writing!

Paddle Hard, Cheer Loud...Win Big!
 
A group of brave (and possibly crazy) Year 2 parents have entered this year's Dragon Boat race...and they need you!

The Dragon Boat races are scheduled for Sunday 20th September 2026 and the Alveston Parents team would absolutely love to have riverside support on the day – so get cheering and, more importantly, please sponsor the team and their heroic efforts here. The atmosphere at this event is always great so do get riverside and enjoy the races, if you can.

Date: 20 Sep 2026

Time: From 10:00am

Location: Stratford Boat Club, CV37 7LS 

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the sport, dragon boating is a fun-filled, adrenaline-pumping, water sports activity. Teams compete in Dragon Boats, which are large canoe-like vessels fitted with ornately carved dragon heads and tails. Crews of up to 17 people sit in pairs and paddle to compete in races over distances of around 250m with each boat having a drummer, beating time to keep the paddlers in unison. At the Stratford event, each team will compete in a minimum of 3 races and are aiming to set the fastest time each round. The teams with the fastest single times will then go into the Grand Final to compete for gold, silver, and bronze Dragon Boat Challenge medals and the winning team will be presented with an engraved Champions Trophy - the Shakespeare Hospice Dragon Boat Champions 2026.

General Reminders
 
Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please note: Parking is only available if there are spaces free and we can only park in the allocated bays. Once all the marked bays are full each day, parents will need to find alternative parking when dropping off and collecting their children. Please do not park in any other areas of the car park going forward. Please do not park on any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings at the main entrance to school. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians. 
 
Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message. You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday). 
 
Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:
