At Alveston, the health, safety and inclusion of every child is at the heart of everything we do. As allergies now affect up to one in three people in the UK, effective allergy management plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment.
We have always adopted a proactive and vigilant approach to allergy management and believe it is important that all parents understand the measures we have in place to protect and support children with allergies.
To safeguard the wellbeing of pupils and staff with allergies, we have implemented a range of comprehensive procedures:
- All staff and volunteers receive annual training to recognise the signs and symptoms of allergic reactions and to respond appropriately, including the safe administration of adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs).
- Staff are trained regularly in Paediatric First Aid, ensuring support is readily available when needed.
- Individual risk assessments are completed in partnership with parents, enabling us to fully understand and effectively support each child's specific allergy needs where complex allergies are prevalent.
- Every child who requires an AAI has a detailed Individual Healthcare Plan that is tailored to their requirements.
- Our catering team follows rigorous allergen management procedures, including strict measures to prevent cross-contamination and the clear communication of allergen information.
- We actively promote an allergy-aware culture across the school, encouraging understanding, empathy, responsibility and kindness within our community.
Through a combination of staff training, careful planning and open communication with families, we are committed to ensuring that every child with allergies feels safe, supported and fully included in all aspects of life at Alveston.
