Sunday 27th September was the Ordnance Survey National 'Get Outside Day' and didn't we have the most beautiful weather for it?!
The theme this year was Be Kind to the environment, to others and to ourselves.
This linked perfectly with our Collective Worship theme this week which centres around our value of 'kindness'.
We started with two wonderful quotes which inspire such warm and kind feelings.
The first is from the bible,
"Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." (Colossians 3:12)
The second from the Roman philosopher, Seneca, who said
"Wherever there is a human being, there is the opportunity for kindness".
There are many stories in the bible about Jesus noticing the needs of others and showing compassion. He also retold stories to teach others his message. On Monday we read the story of The Good Neighbour as one example of this.
Noticing a need can be tricky. We can easily be so busy with things we want to do, or the tasks we have to do, that we can fail to notice someone who needs our help. Sometimes we may even ignore people on purpose because it may hold us up! We spent a moment reflecting on a time when we had stopped what we were doing to help someone else and were kind and compassionate. In doing so we thought about how we felt as a result of our actions and concluded that this can contribute to 'living life in all its fullness'.
We started with two wonderful quotes about being kind and compassionate, so I will end with two more often repeated at Alveston:
"In a world where you can be anything, be kind", (Unknown) and the words often credited to Ghandi,
"Be the change you want to see in the world."
We are lucky at Alveston, our community is kind, our children are kind. In a world where there is so much need, we can lead the way!
