News

15th July 2022

As usual for the end of the summer term, the weeks are jam packed with wonderful high profile events for our children and families.
For example, on Friday 8th, Year 4 mathematicians enjoyed success in the competition held at KES (see below for more information), Friends of Alveston held their most successful Summer Fayre ever (more to come when we have final figures!)  and this afternoon, Year 5 took part in a fabulous production of 'Much Ado About Nothing' at the RSC (we will share more about this next week). I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to have a packed agenda once again!

This week also saw the start of our Year 6 Leavers' events. Starting with their end of year play 'Forever Treasure Island', the Year 6 cast just blew us all away! It was a wonderful, professional performance and it was evident that the children had worked incredibly hard to produce such an entertaining show.

Talking with Year 6 parents this week, it seems our field is indeed a magical field, as the weather is always perfect for our summer events. This year, sadly, it has produced a little too much magic (perhaps it is over excited post COVID?!) and due to the forecast, we have had to cancel Tuesday's Sports Day. However, we will keep everything crossed for the perfect Sports Day and picnic weather on Wednesday.

Enjoy this final weekend of the term and we look forward to an exciting, and emotional!, week ahead.

Maths Competition

Last Friday (8 July),  a team of talented mathematicians took part in a Maths challenge at KES competing against 14 other Stratford Schools. The contest consisted of lots of fast-paced maths challenges, including a relay. Our fantastic team did themselves and Alveston proud, coming 3rd overall. Well done to Elsie, Georgia, Serena and Thomas. You were amazing! Thanks go to KES for organising such a great event and to Mrs Wilcox for accompanying the children.

Weather Update

At 10.30am on Friday 15th July, Warwickshire County Council shard a red, level 4, heat health alert for Monday and Tuesday, issued by the Met Office. They have not, at the time of writing, asked for schools in Warwickshire to close. At present, we are therefore expecting all children to be on school on Monday and Tuesday.

To protect the children, in line with usual procedure, we will:

  • Ensure those children without hats stay in the shade at all times (sunhats with a wide brim are the best choice as they help to avoid sunburn)
  • During breaks and any outdoor activities:
    • encourage children to stay in the shade as much as possible
    • when temperatures are in excess of 30°C, children will be asked to stay in the shade and will not take part in vigorous physical activity
  • Provide children with plenty of water to refill bottles and encourage them to drink more than usual
  • Open windows and doors from 7am in the morning before children arrive
  • Almost close windows when the outdoor air becomes warmer than the air indoors – this should help keep the heat out while allowing adequate ventilation
  • Close indoor blinds or curtains, where possible, and where they do not block window ventilation
  • Keep the use of electric lighting to a minimum and switch off all electrical equipment, when not in use – equipment left in ‘standby mode’ generates heat
  • Encourage children to eat normally and drink plenty of cool water

Each day, please may we ask you to ensure your child:

  • Has a sun hat
  • A bottle of water
  • Sunscreen (at least factor 15 with UVA protection) applied to all exposed skin.

If you have it, sunscreen which lasts 8 hours is perfect. If you feel the sun cream you are using will need to be topped up, due to the level of alert on Monday and Tuesday, children may bring additional sun cream to school. This must be clearly named and children must apply this themselves.

In addition, if you think your child would be cooler in their PE kit (rather than for example, their summer dresses or uniform shorts and polo top) they may wear their PE kit to school on Monday and Tuesday.

We will keep you informed if there are further changes.

Summer Reading Challenge

Saturday 16th July - Friday 2nd September - Summer Reading Challenge.

On Thursday the children had an assembly led by Laura from Stratford-upon-Avon Library. She told them all about the library's exciting 'Summer Reading Challenge'.

This year the theme is Gadgeteers - so all things STEM-related: https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/news/general/gadgeteers-intro

How it works: Families need to visit a library in person to sign up for the challenge. If you haven't already joined the library (it is of course completely free, as are all their events and activities),you can join by following this link: https://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/libraries-2/join-library

Alternatively, children can participate in the Challenge online (using the first link above).

With so many avid readers at Alveston, who equally love a challenge!, this sounds like a lot of fun. For those not so keen, this just might be the motivation they need for the holidays! Enjoy!

Ambulance Air Update

Do you remember the exciting day when the ambulance came into school? As a result the children wanted to raise money for Ambulance Air, a charity which takes ambulances and medical supplies to the Ukraine.

Seven of our girls from Year 5 and Year 6 jumped at the chance to do something and organised their Cake Sale after school. Click here to find out more about what they did and how much they raised!

Remember we said if the children raise £2000, there would be a further surprise fundraising event? I can now reveal that the children will get their wish, Mrs Clewley will go into the stocks for a final fund raising event for the children to throw wet sponges at her!

Follow this link  for our original message of how to donate. Remember you must add 'Alveston C of E Primary School' so we do not miss any donations.
