Welcome back to the Summer Term!
I hope you all had a relaxing break and were able to enjoy some of the fabulous weather. We are all so excited for the term ahead, so to start it with some sunshine was just what we ordered!

As we return to our leafy green and peaceful setting, it is easy to forget - just for moment - that some parts of our world are in so much turmoil and so many lives are being needlessly lost. Before we broke up, our Reception children made doves representing peace to be displayed at St James' church over Easter. Part of the church's Easter Project, the doves look absolutely stunning and are a fabulous reminder to us all that for the sake of the world's children, we must continue to strive for peace.

This week we have more updates from the spring term and the Easter holidays when our children celebrated all things Shakespeare, as well as some news of awards and visits hot off the press.

Please remember to put the afternoon of May 27th in your diary, when we are inviting our families to join us for a Jubilee Celebration.  Find more details in the Newsletter from 1st April or here.

Wishing you all a peaceful Bank Holiday weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 3rd May.

Celebrating Shakespeare

Spring is all about Shakespeare! A wonderful term when we celebrate his birth and his works.

Below you can read all about our Shakespeare Week in school and if you click here you will find out more about the parade our pupils joined during the Easter break.

Shakespeare Week 2022

In March, we celebrated our annual ‘Shakespeare Week’ with each class studying a different Shakespeare text. Below the classes share their focus and activities:

Reception

We enjoyed learning about A Midsummer’s Nights Dream. We learnt about all of the characters including Bottom. We enjoyed watching the CBBCs play re-enacting this. At School we made our own potions which could do curious things! They gave us magical powers such as being able to fly, become invisible or super powerful. Together we made a giant Dream Catcher.

Year 1

Year 1 listened to the story of Macbeth. We then focussed on the role the witches played in the story and we decided that we wanted the witches to be kind characters instead! We then planned and wrote magic potions to make the world a happier place.

Year 2

We read the Tempest, watched the BBC animations and enjoyed exploring the characters Caliban, Ariel, Miranda and Prospero. We discussed what it would be like to live on the island and what the storm on the ship would be like.

Year 3

Year 3 enjoyed studying Romeo and Juliet. We started by learning the main events in the play. Then we thought more about the characters. We explored their feelings using dramatic techniques and wrote a diary entry as Romeo. We also talked about issues in the play.

Year 4

Year 4 studied the Taming of the Shrew. First, we summarised the story by using a story board. We then considered how different characters felt and how they would feel in relation to the world we live in today. Year 4 did this through 'hot seating' and in their writing.

Year 5

Year 5 looked at Much Ado About Nothing. We began by story-mapping the plot of the play and then looked more closely at events from the perspective of one of our favourite characters. Later in the year, we are really looking forward to taking part in a production of the play at the RST Theatre as part of the RSC playmaking project.

Year 6

Year 6 studied Shakespeare's sonnets. We looked at how Shakespeare wrote his sonnets and interpreted the meaning. We learnt about the form of a sonnet and the iambic pentameter. Following this, we wrote our own sonnets. We were able to choose our own theme but the sonnet had to follow the correct form- i.e. the iambic pentameter with ten syllables in each line and a set rhyming scheme. Afterwards we performed and recorded our own poems. The children really did a fantastic job and we definitely have some budding poets and actors in Year 6!
