News

19th April 2024

One of the reasons I love working in a primary school is that we live and breathe the seasons in full, bright colour! We sing, learn, write and draw about them all. In addition, we are so lucky to have the most glorious outdoor environment to physically experience the seasons at play in our grounds and at Forest School. This week we have truly felt April with bright, warm sunshine, chilly winds, rain showers and icy hail - and all in the space of an hour! Part of this wonderful celebration of all things spring, we have also experienced nature in all its glory and witnessed the circle of life. The awe of baby birds, nesting outside our classrooms, with some cheeky ones coming in to check on Year 5's learning, the sadness at finding some birds who have lost their lives at the hands of nature and the delight at discovering moles thriving in our field and plotting ways to protect them.
Just as nature doesn't do things by half, nor do our children! Shine Time this week was also filled full to the brim of wonderful celebrations for children who are motivated, helpful, working hard and achieving great things in their lessons, the sporting arena and colouring competitions.
We ended the week with bright sunshine outside and very shiny children inside - spring in all its glory!
Whatever you are doing this weekend, enjoy!

A Day in the Life of a Roman

On Wednesday, Year 3 experienced life in the Roman army and discovered more about how the Celts in Britain lived under Roman rule. We had lots of fun handling replicas of the equipment used by Roman soldiers and dressing as them before becoming legionaries marching in formation on the playground. Later, we learned more about everyday life by exploring a forum where we tried writing, shopping, dressing and playing like Romans. We also tried on the equipment of gladiators and practised honing our skills in small groups with nets and pretend tridents! Finally, we enjoyed learning and playing more Roman games as well as listening to some exciting Roman myths. We all had a great day learning more by getting hands on with Roman life!

Sporting News!

And what a sporting week it's been...

Year 6 Boys Football

Our Year 6 Boys football team played a friendly against Holy Trinity this week. This was the first time that the boys had played 9v9 and they were determined to perform well in a tricky game dominated by the wind. Holy Trinity took the lead in the first half but this did not stop Alveston - the game ended in a draw (with many more on target chances being set up by our boys).

Well done to all our footballers and a big thank you to all families and coaches who attended the match.

Year 6 Girls Football

Our Year 6 Girls football team came in fighting at their friendly match against Holy Trinity. The girls were the strongest they have ever been, working as a team and using the skills they have been developing all year. Again, our girls’ determination saw them setting up more goals in the second half and driving forwards until the very end.

A big well done girls and a massive thanks to all families that attended. Thank you to coach Tom Sidwell for your continued support.

Cross Country County Race

A big shout out this week to Oliver from Year 4 for representing South Warwickshire in the County Cross Country Race! Ollie’s hard work and determination throughout the year saw him qualify to represent South Warwickshire. The race was very competitive with lots of fast runners. With us all cheering him along, Ollie placed 4th out of 12 runners across Warwickshire. A massive well done to Ollie for this huge achievement. We can’t wait to see you run next year!

Fitt4Kids Inter-House Competition

Last week, all children throughout the school took part in an inter-house competition. All classes had four tasks to complete within their house groups including a beanbag toss, speed bounce, hockey dribble and tennis ball shuttle. Teachers were so impressed with the children who worked hard on their accuracy, agility and speed within their teams.

The inter-house competition was tight, with all children putting in their all to compete against their fellow classmates. The scores have been counted and verified and we can confirm the winning team won by just one point! Drum roll, please.........

Huge congratulations to Avon Blues for winning the inter-house competition!!! Well done to Tudor Reds for being our runners-up!

Creative Colouring Success
Some of our Year 4 children entered a colouring competition promoted by Stratford Leisure Centre. Asked to design and colour a swimming hat with just three colours and their favourite things, the prize was a free pass for TAG active. We may be a small school but we are mighty! We are absolutely delighted to announce that we had not one but 4 winners from Year 4! Well done to Alexa, Eleanor, Jess and Harvey-James, who all won a free pass for TAG active.

Governors Update April

The School Governors met on Thursday 18th April to carry out their delayed second Spring Term meeting (delayed as members were not available as planned in March). It should be noted that the governing body has reduced in number due to departures for personal and work commitments. Recruiting is progressing.

As required, governors reviewed the minutes and actions from the previous Spring Term meeting – noting that all actions relating to parental engagement and wellbeing had been completed. The methodology for informing parents on school matters was agreed.

This meeting covered a range of significant topics. The two most important were the annual Local Authority safeguarding review and the school budget for 2024-25. In the former case, governors were reminded of the small but significant changes made to Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023.

Governors reviewed the previous spend in 2023-24 and then signed off the budget for the year.

Other discussion items included data analysis with regards to Maths and overall pupil progress, as well as the daily interventions to support and challenge the children.

Finally, the meeting was advised on a number of church related matters including the SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) inspection, due in 2024-25.

Road Closure Update

Monday 15th April brought the Knights Lane road closure to life and with it, an increased volume of traffic outside school. We've also seen an increase in the parking outside our residents' homes. This is making crossing the road a real hazard for our families. Please do continue to use the Stratford FC car park rather than using Knights Lane as a drop-off point. We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.
 Don't forget...

...to bag it up for the Bag2school collection on Tuesday 23rd April! Please bring your bags to the main gates at morning drop-off, ready for collection. Let's make it a bumper haul everybody and see if we can beat our last weigh-in!
Stress Awareness Month

It’s Stress Awareness Month and Warwickshire County Council is sharing tips and information to help people find ways to manage stress and improve their wellbeing.

Continuing the theme this week, the council is focusing on young people who may be preparing for summer examinations and offering help to manage the pressures they may face around exams and in considering their plans for the future.

An Invitation to the Croft Preparatory School Open Evening

The Croft are planning their biennial Secondary Schools’ Open Evening and should like to extend an invitation to the Year 5 parents and pupils of Alveston C of E Primary School. The event will take place on Wednesday 1 May, 5.30 – 7pm, and is designed specifically to inform parents and pupils of their secondary school options.

Eighteen secondary schools will exhibit at the Open Evening, including some of Warwickshire County Council’s Southern Area schools and a number of independent secondary schools.

The Open Evening is held in the Theatre and there is ample parking in the adjacent car park.

Girls Rugby in Stratford

The Women’s World Cup comes to England in 2025! As part of the build up to that, the RFU have empowered over 45 clubs across England to encourage and develop the women’s and girls’ game through ‘Love Rugby’ in the summer of 2024.

Stratford-upon-Avon RFC already has a thriving ladies and junior girls touch section, established in 2012. They are now one of these clubs empowered to showcase what rugby has to offer to women and girls alike, in all its forms!

The ‘Love Rugby’ festival starts with a taster session for any girls from Year 5 to Year 13 to come along to see what it is all about – fun, fitness and maybe to find their tribe!

Where: Stratford-upon-Avon RFC

When: Sunday 19th May, 10-12

What to wear: T-shirt (and a jumper!), shorts, trainers - not need for 'rugby' kit or boots.

If they then catch the bug, there will be an opportunity to sign up to a 4-session summer activity course.
