Happy New Year!

It's been such a busy first week back. It was lovely to welcome our three Ofsted inspectors in so that they could see what life at Alveston is like. Obviously as one of the first schools being inspected under the new framework this meant that the inspection was quite different to any previous ones. It does also mean that we may need to wait for a longer period of time for our report but, as soon as it is available, it will be shared with you. Thank you for taking the time to fill in Parent View and to speak with the inspectors.

Years 4 and 5 loved battling it out to see who would be crowned victorious as the TT Rockstars Battle of the Bands winner on Wednesday. It was a closely fought battle with 7,368 correct answers submitted during the day. I am really proud of all our players but the winning class was ... Year 5! Congratulations.

What fun last night was bringing a flurry of snow. After all the lights and joy of Christmas had been packed away and finished for the year, it was so exciting for the dream of snow to wake up to but alas, it wasn't to be for us this time. Still, the chilly mornings have been beautiful and it's always lovely to at least feel like it's winter!

Have a great weekend.

Stars of the Week!

Our first Shine Time of 2026 will be held next week, on Friday 16th January.

Team Cup Winners

Congratulations to this week's Team Point winners, Avon Blues! Well done to everyone who earned a team point this week.
Rock Out!

This week, we held our Times Table Rockstars Battle of the Bands! The children in Year 4 and Year 5 came to school dressed as rock stars, ready to throw out all their best times table skills in an attempt to be the winning class. The challenge was 30 minutes per class to work as a team to achieve the highest score. Everyone got involved and everyone worked hard, not just on the maths but on their costumes too! Sadly, there can only be one winner and the victors this time were Year 5! Both classes really enjoyed the element of competition and team-working, improving their maths skills while having lots of fun! The next TTRS Battle of the Bands day will be announced soon...

Let Down Your Hair!

Year 1 have been busy-bees getting to know their new text: Rapunzel. Together we have been oral storytelling this week, practising using a story teller voice, recognising traditional story language and joining in with repeated refrains. The children have produced some terrific story maps to help them remember key parts of the story. Great work Year 1!
The First Flight

This week in History, Year 2 have been learning about the very first powered flight in 1903, when the Wright Brothers managed to stay in the air for an incredible 12 seconds! We learned about Orville and Wilbur Wright, watched video footage of their historic flight and discussed why this moment was so important. Working in groups, the children explored how the Wright Brothers might have been feeling before and during the flight, as well as how eyewitnesses may have felt watching this amazing event. They brought their ideas to life using freeze-frames and thought-bubbles, showing fantastic engagement and creativity. The children came up with some brilliant adjectives to describe emotions, including 'proud', 'worried', 'nervous', 'shaky', 'bubbly' and 'in awe'. Their thoughtful discussions and enthusiasm were wonderful to see.

Bridge the Gap

Year 5 are focussing on structures and bridges in Design Technology this term. They enjoyed making and testing different bridge shapes made from card.
Let There Be Light!

In Science, Year 6 have begun a new topic on light. They have been learning that light travels in straight lines, light moves from a light source to an object, and that reflection occurs when light rays bounce off a surface. To apply their understanding, the children created their own mirror mazes using torches, multilink cubes, and mirrors.
Year 4 Topic

This week, Year 4 had great fun starting their new topic, “How have children’s lives changed?” They began their learning by carefully observing a range of pictorial sources, using these to make thoughtful deductions about life in the past. Building on this, the children discussed what they could see and what it might tell them about childhood in different times. They then recorded the similarities and differences between the Roman, Tudor, Victorian and modern eras, showing excellent historical thinking and curiosity throughout the lesson.

Brand New Youth Theatre in Town!

There will be a brand new youth theatre in Stratford, running out of Rother Street Arts House, from the 2nd February 2026!

Arts Insight Theatre Company will be running the classes which are taking place in the theatre’s beautiful auditorium, each week. Arts Insight has been working with children and young people since 2010 providing a safe, nurturing and creative environment for all.  They aim to provide opportunities for all young people to learn invaluable life skills, discover and share their voices, meet like-minded people and have multiple performance opportunities each year.  Regardless of age, ability, culture or experience, Arts Insight welcomes and maintains a safe, motivating and inclusive environment for everyone.

The weekly timetable is as follows:

Monday:  6-7pm - Mixed age group for 7-14 year olds

Saturday:  1-2pm - Junior age group for 7-10 year olds

Saturday:  2:10 - 3:10pm - Senior age group for 11-14 year olds

Arts Insight will be offering FREE taster sessions at the above times on Friday 17th and Monday 19th January 2026 in the auditorium, and they would love any theatre and performance-loving students to come along.

Arts Insight will visit school soon to provide an assembly, for all KS2 children, to tell them all about youth theatre, in a fun and interactive way. To learn more, click here.

General Reminders

Parking at Drop-Off and Pick-Up
We are so lucky at Alveston that the Football Club allow all our parents who drive to school to use their car park for drop-off and pick-up. This makes it safer for all our children. Please continue to use the Football Club car park. Please do not park on Knights Lane, Oak Road or any double-yellow lines for pick-up or drop-offs. Please also ensure that you do not stop or park within the zig-zag "Keep Clear" markings. This area is marked to keep the flow of traffic moving and to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Sickness and Absence
Please let the school office know each day your child is absent from school by calling 01789 293412, option 1, and leaving a message.  You may also email parents3002@welearn365.com. You do not need to contact us daily if your child is sick/vomits. Absences for sickness/vomiting will be recorded 48 hours from the end of the day your child was last sick (i.e. if sick on Sunday, come back on Wednesday; if Tuesday come back on Friday).

Medicines in School
We cannot accept medicines in school without a prescription label and a medical form completed by a parent or carer.  Please ask the school office for more information and/or a form via:
